Mary B. Skipper arrived at the rescue one week before Missy and Joy and is from the same owner who is getting on in years and wanted a special place for his girls. During her life Mary had twelve foals earning her owners $509,000. The last foal sold for $15000 so she has nice breeding too but that's all history since she will not be bred again. Her broodmare days are over and her racing days were over twenty-one years ago. Mary has been put out to pasture which is fine with her. She would make a great companion horse and is not aggressive with other horses. She's very sweet and loves attention and is blind in the left eye from cataracts.
On the day before Thanksgiving 2006 Mary was lying down quite a bit. She was shivering so we dried her off with a hair dryer and put a blanket on her. Later on that evening Mary was shaking almost uncontrollably and laid down again. Mike was her and Chris was on the phone to the vet. Mary had two spasms and Mike whispered to her to let it go and she would be fine. Mary relaxed, her left ear twiched and she died. We don't know the exact reason but in earlier checkups with the vet, he told us that her aeorta was enlarged and she might go on for weeks or months but then we could find her dead one morning. We suspect this is what happened but a necropsy was not done. Mary was buried the following Sunday due to the holiday and not being able to find someone to bury her. Mary was a sweet old mare and just had too many babies.
