Springer came to us from a woman that kept him in a barn for seven years in PA.
She was told to either give him up or face criminal charges.
He came in three hundred pounds underweight and suffering from heaves.
He is still thin to this day and is considered a hard keeper.
His heaves have all but gone away as we use nettles in his feed daily.
He has been adopted by Lynn Englehardt, one of our board members and has buddied up with Rosie.
On December 31, 2003, Mike noticed that Springer wasn't sticking his head out his stall as usual looking for his breakfast. Concerned, Mike went out to check on Spring and his worse fears were confirmed. Sometime in the early hours of New Year's Eve Springer had crossed the Rainbow Bridge with Rosie at his side. There was no sign of any struggle and he just laid down and died. Mike and Chris were shocked as Spring showed absolutely no signs of any distress the night before. He was happily eating his dinner and most of Rosie's too. Springer was a funny horse with tons of personality. He would always try to figure out how to escape his stall and munch on the short winter grass or lead the old guys on a jaunt around the property or even circle the neighbor's property. He would never stay gone long and would always come back flaunting his escape tactics. He was very full of himself. We will miss him. He is buried next to Sandy and Free.
