Our Wish List

s a small non-profit with limited resources, we must depend on the generosity of corporate and private donors to meet our mission statement of saving horses.

O.gifur staff is all volunteer with no salaries paid. Ninety-five cents of every dollar goes directly to the horses in the form of feed, farrier, veterinarian, and housing costs. The remaining five cents goes to administrative costs such as paper for our printer, ink, internet and other related costs.

W.gife are a non-profit recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(C)(3) humane corporation and as such your gift may be deductible from your tax liability.

T.gifhe following is a list of items we need but are unable to buy(except hay and cubes) because of these limited resources.

buttonWe are in need of a pickup in good working order. The one we use now is a 1994 Ford F-150 6 cylinder and won't haul horses.

buttonUsed or new ski clothing. We have many out of area college students that always freeze during the winter. Ski clothing especially bib overalls would help them stay warmer when they are working here at the rescue. The clothing can be stained or out of style just so long as it's warm and useable. We would keep the clothing here to use for subsequent students coming in.

buttonHorse Trailer-Our current trailer has just about rusted out and is not safe to pull horses. A two horse bumper pull that is solid would prevent us from using friend's trailers.

buttonYork Rake-A York type rake to go behind our compact trailer. The new pastures are full of ruts and the rake would smooth them out.

buttonHay-We go thru twelve bales of grass hay a day with the horses we have here at the main facility. We use about 3300 bales a year. Good quality grass hay is best. When we have to buy it as we are now that price per bale runs #3.50 per bale. The bales we have now run about forty pounds.

buttonNutrena Safe Choice-We have eleven horses on senior feed. All of our horses are feed Safe Choice since it's made for all life cycles. We are currently paying $11.95 a bag from Country Max in Batavia. We use almost three tons a month.

buttonStone-Our pastures are clay and nasty when wet. We use 5/8" crusher run stone over the clay so that it's not so mucky. One of the horses was eating his grain out of a feeder was literally up to his front knees in mud. We were concerned he might break a leg if another horse startled him. We are trying to prevent this type of situation and any advice would be appreciated.

buttonLumber-We use a lot of 2"x6" lumber in building our shelters and fencing. Currently we have need for 8',10' and 12' lengths. Rough cut is fine. The horses don't care. Any amount would be appreciated. We also use pressure treated 4'x4' posts in 10' and 12' lengths. 4'x8' exterior plywood is also used in each shelter. Eight sheets per shelter.

buttonWood Shavings-Each stall uses a minimum of three 40 pound bags on a weekly basis. We have one 10'x48' shelter, one 14'x26' shelter, three 10'x12'shelters, three 11'x16' run-ins and one 10'x20' temporary shelter that needs a new fabric covering. We use only pine shavings. Anything with Black Walnut or Cherry is harmful to the horses.

buttonCash-The one thing we are always short of. The cost to care for one healthy horse for one day runs about $4.25 a day which includes feed, farrier and worming. Any donation, no matter how small is critical to us. We have a sponsor page on our site if anyone would be interested in helping to care for a particular horse on a monthly basis.

buttonVolunteers-We desperately need people who are willing to commit to an hour or two a week to help with feeding and grooming the horses. It only takes about forty-five minutes to feed in the morning and evening but because of health reasons it is getting more difficult for us. If we don't have more people to help we may have to close the rescue. It's not something we want to do but we have been doing this every day for nearly eleven years with no days off and we are tired. We get a lot of calls for people wanting to help but few will stay. The horses have to eat in snow, rain or sun twice a hay. If you don't live close enough to our facility, won't you please consider helping another rescue? Without volunteers we can't help the horses, no matter how good our intentions.

buttonOffice Supplies-We use a lot of white printer paper, ink cartridges, manila folders and other office type supplies.
