Horse of the Month

Patches and Cali

Patches and Cali(short for Calico) came into the rescue on May 21, 2007. There were a total of five horses that we brought in and had purchased all of them from a family who could not afford to feed them all. At the time Cali was only five days old and a very small and weak little filly whose dam had little milk for her due to starvation. Cali will be one year old on May 16th and is almost as tall as her mother. An animal communicator friend of ours told us that Patches is ready to go to work as long as it's not having more babies. We promised her that would never happen again. Patches is rideable but we havn't tried her out of the paddock area yet as Cali would always freak out whenever Chris would get on mom. Cali has been trained to lead and pick up her feet. She has become much calmer in the past couple of months and is ready for some serious training. We have kept the two of them together and do not believe in artifically separating mother and foal at six months. This is a practice most breeders follow and we believ the foal has much to learn from the dam. Cali is proving our point. She has become a strong and intelligent young filly without the burden of a stressful separation. She has learned much from her wise mother and she will continue to do so throughout her life.

Open House

The Open House was a rousing success. We were very pleasantly surprised at the sheer number of people that attended. There were hundreds. The street in front was lined up for nearly a half mile in both directions. The weather was perfect and though we only had maybe eight or nine vendors, everyone had a good time. We sold 140 hot dogs, cases of bottled water and soft drinks, not to mention some great barbequed ribs. The band was great and 78 people went for pony rides on Gabe and Chase at $2.00 per ride. All the volunteers have sunburned faces and everyone is exhausted. We picked up a few new volunteers and maybe even a few horse placements. We are already planning about our second annual Open House on September 7, 2008. See you there.

Now available. Beautiful photgraphs of the horses at the rescue by photographer Suzanne McAndrew. Suzanne was kind enough to travel from Buffalo to photograph our rescue horses. She has won several awards and has a great talent for capturing the soul of each horse with her camera. She has spent many hours editing each photo to her satisfaction and is letting the rescue use them on our website but each photograph is copyrighted by Suzanne. You can see her incredible and very moving work by clicking on the link below.

A Message From The Founders

Things are once again critical here at the rescue. Donations have dropped off dramatically. With the addition of the five new girls plus six from the closing of the Rush BOCES Campus and lastly, Magee, a four year old Standardbred gelding tht broke a sesamoid bone during training, we are once more faced with hay and feed shortages. The girls eat like they have never seen food before and most times they didn't on a regular basis. At first they didn't know what apples and carrots were and we don't think they had ever seen a salt block before from the way they would spend hours licking the one we put in the paddock. All have now had their feet done and they are gaining weight but we still need lots of help both with volunteers and monetary or feed donations. We are appealing to our readers and supporters to please send in whatever you can to help feed and care for the horses. Any amount from $1, $5, or $10 will help. We have twenty-seven horses here now(Dillon, JR and Cringle from BOCES have been placed) after the death of Rosie on March 3 and Cham on August 3, 2007, a few of them are special needs horses such as Serenity, Cookie and Bailey. Cookie has foundered and needs low carb feed as well and straight grass hay cubes. Serenity is now thirty-eight years old and has few teeth so she is fed a wet mix of hay cubes, Nutrena Life Design Senior and cooked carrots and apples when we have them. Bailey suffers from Cushings Disease and needs his Pergolide daily. Won't you consider becoming a sponsor? Would your company consider becoming a corporate sponsor? We still need your help and we need it now. None of our staff are paid. All are volunteers. Every dime with the exception of office supplies and other incidentals goes directly to the care and feeding of the horses. Please consider bequests, memorial donations, birthday donations in place of gifts. We are currently building more pastures to be able to rotate the horses but there isn't enough grass to support the number of horses we have. They need hay and Safe Choice, a pelleted feed from Nutrena. If you prefer, you can call our feed supplier, Country Max, at 585-344-4554 and put a bag of feed on your credit or debit card. Tell them it's for H.O.R.S.E. Rescue and Sanctuary and they'll hold it for us to pick up. We have had some feed donations which we greatly appreciate but we would like to know who you are. Please leave your address at Country Max so that we may send you a receipt and be able to thank you. In addition, we use Triple Crown Low Starch along with vitamin C and E with selenium and MSM. Please help us to help the horses.
